Greenwood Cemetery grave decorations need to be removed by March 15

MUSCATINE, Iowa – The annual spring cleanup of Muscatine Greenwood Cemetery is underway. All grave decorations are to be removed by Wednesday, March 15, 2023, according to cemetery staff. Remaining grave decorations will be removed and discarded by cemetery staff after that date.

Grave decorations include, but are not limited to, wreaths, silk flowers, grave blankets, wooden crosses, toys, cobblestones, and potted plants. Undecorated metal shepherd’s hooks, Remembrance Vigil Candles, and Solar Lights will not be removed.

New grave decorations may be brought in after Saturday, April 1, 2023, with no more than two decorations per grave site.

Muscatine Police release annual report for 2022

MUSCATINE, Iowa – The Muscatine Police Department has released the 2022 annual report highlighting the activities of the various divisions and programs sponsored by the department. Click on the following link to download the 2022 Annual Report as a PDF. 

One of the highlights from the Patrol Division is the success of the Project ABLE program, a concept designed to prevent public harm through developing a department-wide commitment to the ideals of peer intervention. Training to the Project ABLE standards has resulted in no personnel complaints in 2022.

Several programs also saw continued success in 2022 including:

  • The POPCAN Project works to create a safer environment in places where a higher volume of calls for service and serious incidents have transpired.
  • The Code Blue program assisted six families in need during 2022 by providing meals and emotional support.
  • The “Book and a Badge” series, a partnership with Musser Public Library that talks about different aspects of a police officer’s job and allowed officers to read a book to children during each episode.
  • Continued support for the Muscatine Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) group that is helping to ensure that all segments of the Muscatine community feel included and supported.
  • Continued use of Problem Oriented Policing (POP) and Community Policing (COP) projects as the cornerstone of proactive law enforcement efforts in Muscatine. That allows for greater communication and interaction between citizens and law enforcement.

Elves Workshop to be held December 10 at Muscatine Mall

MUSCATINE, Iowa – The Muscatine Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring the Elves Workshop, an annual event returning to the Muscatine Mall just in time for the final push before Christmas. The event will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2022. 

Santa and his elves are taking a break from the hustle and bustle of the North Pole, and now it is your turn to be an elf for a day. Children will visit Santa’s workshop to decorate crafts, make their very own holiday cards, participate in reindeer games and even talk to Saint Nick himself. Fun and games will be aplenty when the Muscatine Mall transforms into the North Pole. 

The Elves Workshop is a FREE activity for children and families with no pre-registration required.

Annual Street Financial Report on Council agenda

MUSCATINE, Iowa – The Muscatine City Council will be asked to approve the Annual Street Finance Report for Fiscal Year 2021-2022 during the Council’s final meeting before the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, (Nov. 17), one of several housekeeping items that are on the Council agenda. 

The City Council meets at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Council Chambers at Muscatine City Hall, 215 Sycamore Street, Muscatine, Iowa. A virtual session is offered in conjunction with the in-person meeting for those who want to view the proceedings or make a comment but do not feel comfortable attending in person. Instructions for joining the virtual session are listed below.

The City Street Finance Report is required by the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) of all cities, and shows all street-related expenditures and related funding sources. Street related expenditures for the past fiscal year were $13,395,606 and that was up from $10,561,544 in Fiscal Year 2020-2021 and $9,385,512 in Fiscal Year 2019-2020.

Street-related costs in the General Fund (ongoing street maintenance) accounted for $3,009,908 in the past fiscal year, and street-related debt service on principal and interest for outstanding bond issues came in at $1,551,188. 

Capital Project expenditures for Fiscal Year 2021/2022 came in at $8,496,825 and include: $5,569,960 for the Mississippi Drive/Grandview Avenue Corridor Project; $934,329 for street resurfacing, $837,063 for the 2nd Street Streetscape Project, $1,022,405 for the Park Avenue 4-to-3 Lane Conversion Project; $23,072 for the 67th Street Sidewalk Project engineering design; and, $109,996 for the right-of-way purchase for the new Love’s Truck Stop access road.

A major funding source for street expenditures is Road Use Tax ($3,289,871 in FY2021-2022). Additional funds came from Local Option Sales Tax ($774,940), Public Works charged for services ($122,410), and a federal grant from FEMA ($20,728) for windstorm cleanup.

Among the other items on the agenda is:

  • Swearing in of Firefighter Donald Petersen;
  • Resolutions for internal advances of funds for Tax Increment Urban Renewal Projects;
  • Resolutions for annual appropriation for Tax Increment Financing Rebate obligations;
  • Adoption of the Iowa League of Cities Record Retention Manual as the official schedule for the City of Muscatine; and,
  • Approval of an agreement with DOT and acceptance of an ARPA grant for MuscaBus.

GMCCI Job Fair set for June 2 at MHS Van Heck Center

MUSCATINE, Iowa – The Second Annual Muscatine Area Job Fair, sponsored by the Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GMCCI), will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday (June 2) in the Van Heck Center on the Muscatine High School campus, 2705 Cedar Street, Muscatine.

Permanent, temporary, and summer jobs for all skill levels, ages 14-years-old and up, are available in Muscatine. Stop by and learn more about local businesses and the career opportunities available. In addition, multiple employers will also be providing information on training programs, certificates, and educational opportunities.

The City of Muscatine will be among the 30-plus businesses on hand with representatives from Muscatine Parks & Recreation, Muscatine Fire, and Muscatine Police.

The Job Fair is cosponsored by IowaWORKS and in partnership with the Mississippi Valley Workforce Development Board.

DPW Spring Leaf Collection begins Monday in Zone 1

MUSCATINE, Iowa – Spring is here and with that comes the annual pilgrimage to break out the rakes and remove the last vestiges of winter by cleaning up left over yard waste. The Department of Public Works (DPW) is prepared to assist residents with their cleanup efforts again this year with the annual Spring leaf collection starting Monday (April 4).

 

DPW leaf vacuum trucks will be out on the streets of Muscatine starting Monday collecting leaves that have been raked, or carried, to the boulevard in front of a homeowner’s residence. The trucks will begin with Zone 1 and continue until all eight zones are completed.

 

Residents should have their leaves gathered and piled on the boulevard in front of their residences before collection begins on Monday.

This is the only time leaf collection will be conducted during the Spring season. Residents are reminded that they can bag their own leaves and take them to the Compost Facility at the Muscatine Transfer Station. (See COMPOST FACILITY)

 

General guidelines for leaf pickup:

  • Leaves should be placed near but not beyond the curb, and should be within reach of the leaf vacuum. Leaves should be free of tree branches and twigs as they can cause the leaf vacuums to clog up. 
  • All leaves must be placed outside of fenced areas.
  • Leaves are not to be placed in the street to avoid clogging storm drains.
  • Leaves should not be placed in street or extend into traffic lanes, thereby creating traffic hazards.
  • Leaves should not be placed around obstacles such as mailbox posts, sign posts and light poles.
  • Crews will not pick up leaves mixed with debris, logs, branches, rocks, plastic, metal or glass containers, or any other types of refuse.
  • Leaves should not be placed on City cul-de-sacs, vacant land, or City property except on the public right-of-way along the curb/shoulder area.
