Old boat launch closed as dredging operations begin

MUSCATINE, Iowa – Dredging of the downriver boat launch area in Riverside Park began Thursday (Sept. 22) and the launch area is now closed for public use. The upriver boat launch is available for public use, however.

Braun Excavating has begun removing mud and debris from the launch area with the piles of mud being placed on the ramp surface to dewater.

The piles of mud is scheduled to be hauled away next week depending on the length of time the dewatering process takes. Once the dredging operation has been completed and the piles of mud and debris are hauled away, the Muscatine Fire Department will clean the boat launch area by washing the remaining mud back into the Mississippi River.

Boaters should anticipate the downriver boat launch being closed through September 30, weather permitting. The newer, upriver boat launch is available for boaters to use in launching and recovering their boats.

Dredging operations in the Muscatine Boat Harbor and Marina will begin next week, weather permitting. The dredged material will be piped to the old Hawkeye Lumber site where the material will flow into one of several long and large bags where they will be allowed to settle and dewater.

Dredging operations set to begin at two locations

MUSCATINE, Iowa – Dredging of the Muscatine Boat Harbor and Marina will begin in the next two weeks after the dredge used for the operation was launched Friday morning from the downriver boat launch in Riverside Park.

That boat launch will be closed to the public starting Monday (Sept. 19) for a dredging operation of its own. Braun Excavating will begin the removal of mud and debris from the ramp area of the boat launch with the first order of business removing the ramp and dock located near the Pearl City Station. 

The entire boat launch area will be blocked off throughout the operation. 

Individuals wanting to launch and/or recover their boats during this operation are asked to use the newer boat launch in the upriver end of Riverside Park.

Dredged material will be placed on the ramp to dewater before being removed from the site. The public is urged to stay off the old boat launch area and to avoid the piles of dredged material. 

Some parking restrictions may occur.

Crews from the Water Resource and Recovery Facility will be conducting the dredging operations of the Muscatine Boat Harbor and Marina. Dredged material will be piped to holding bags located in the old Hawkeye Lumber site and allowed to dewater and dry over the next several months.

Dredging operations should begin once the piping and floats are installed in the harbor, and the bags are placed and connected at Hawkeye Lumber.

Individuals wanting to launch and/or recover their boats during this operation are asked to use the newer boat launch area in the upriver end of Riverside Park.

Muscatine Harbor slip rentals available; gas dock open

MUSCATINE, Iowa – The Muscatine Boat Harbor and Marina and the Municipal Gas Dock, located in the upriver portion of Riverside Park on the Mississippi River, are open and available for public use. Both are operated by the Muscatine Parks and Recreation Department.

The Municipal Boat Harbor and Marina has a variety of slips available for rent including 18 for houseboats and 64 for smaller, pleasure, and speed boats. Slips are non-covered and each one is equipped with electricity and water. The docking season began on May 1 and continues until October 1. (See below for contract, rates, and rules for the Boat Harbor).

The Municipal Gas Dock, located on the Muscatine riverfront in the channel just upriver from the Muscatine Boat Harbor and Marina, has gas and diesel available along with pump out service for boaters. Pump out is free with fuel purchase or $5.00 without a fuel purchase.

060821 Boat Harbor Gas Dock 03 (JPG)The Gas Dock is open 5-7 p.m. on Fridays, and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting. Fuel is also available during the weekdays by calling the Parks and Recreation office at (563) 263-0241 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. 

The Parks and Recreation Department would like to remind boat owners that slip rentals are currently being taken with plenty of slips still available to rent for the season. The Muscatine Municipal Boat Harbor and Marina is the perfect place to store your boat for the season, allowing you more time on the water and less time launching and retrieving your craft.
