MUSCATINE Iowa – Two individuals have been arrested and a third is being sought following an investigation into an alleged assault that occurred on April 9, 2023, according to the Muscatine Police Department (MPD).
MPD officers responded to a report of an assault at the Muscatine Walmart, 3003 N. Highway 61, at approximately 11:33 a.m. Sunday, April 9, 2023. A subsequent investigation established that two males had assaulted a third male causing an injury that required medical attention.
As a result of the investigation, the following individuals have been arrested and charged for their involvement with the incident:
Duran Flowers Jr. – 08/05/94 – 1816 Logan St. C1, Serious Assault (causing bodily injury), Simple assault, and Disorderly Conduct.
Charlene Rene Thompson – 12/16/88 – 1816 Logan St. C1, Theft in the 5th degree.
In addition, an arrest warrant has been filed for the arrest of:
Emanuel Matthew Ellis – 05/26/04 – Address unknown, Serious Assault (causing bodily injury) and Disorderly Conduct.

MUSCATINE, Iowa – The following is a statement from Muscatine Community School District Superintendent Clint Christopher and Muscatine Police Chief Tony Kies regarding the response to a threat called into Muscatine Police just after the start of the school day.
Muscatine High School students, families, and staff members,
Our high school was ‘swatted’ this morning. That means that a fake threat was called into the Muscatine Police Department from outside of the state of Iowa. The threat also referenced a staff member’s name that does not exist within our high school or district.
Muscatine Police responded accordingly, swept the entire building, and once they informed us that there was no credible threat, we could resume the school day.
While this is certainly a disruption to the day, we will do our best to resume school as normal at Muscatine High School. Should any students or staff need to speak with a counselor, please know it is okay.
Similar ‘swatting’ calls are happening to other school districts across the state of Iowa. Mulberry Elementary School was also temporarily locked down due to its proximity to Muscatine High School.
Please know that we take the safety of all students and staff very seriously and work very closely with the Muscatine Police Department. We appreciate their efforts and timely response.
MUSCATINE, Iowa – A Muscatine woman has been charged following a hit and run investigation by the Muscatine Police Department.
The Muscatine Police & Fire Departments were called to the 300 block of Broadway Street on January 13, 2023, for a female who had been run over by a vehicle. The initial investigation revealed that the collision had been the result of a larger disturbance where two groups of people came together for a mutual fight.
Through the course of the investigation, it was determined that Cora Lynn Reed, 18 (DOB 06/21/04), of 214 Park Avenue, voluntarily arrived with a passenger in the 300 block of Broadway Street, for the purpose of participating in a physical confrontation.
As Reed tried to leave the area, she struck a 17-year-old female who was also partaking in the disturbance. The 17-year-old was run over by the front tire of Reed’s vehicle. Reed then reversed the vehicle, running over the 17-year-old a second time. Reed then left the scene with her passenger.
Cora Lynn Reed was arrested Thursday (Jan. 26, 2023) and charged with serious injury by vehicle, a Class D felony, and reckless driving, a misdemeanor. Reed is considered to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
MUSCATINE, Iowa – Three individuals have been arrested following an investigation by the Muscatine Police Officers of a drive-by shooting in Muscatine Tuesday night.
The Muscatine Police Department responded at approximately 1:02 a.m. Wednesday (Jan. 18) to a report of gunshots fired in the 1300 block of Oak Street. There were no injuries reported but a residence was struck multiple times by gun fire.
The suspect vehicle was stopped as it was leaving the scene.
Three individuals were placed under arrest and charged with Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon (C Felony) due to their involvement in the incident. Those charged include Christian James, 18 (DOB 11/26/2004), 102 Spencer Avenue, Fruitland, Iowa, a 17-year-old female from Muscatine, Iowa, and a 16-year-old male from Davenport, Iowa.
This is believed to be a targeted incident and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

MUSCATINE, Iowa – A Muscatine man escaped injury but his home is a total loss following a three-alarm fire Friday morning that was hampered by subzero temperatures and strong winds.
The Muscatine Joint Communications Center (MUSCOM) received a 911 call at approximately 7:46 a.m. Friday (Dec. 23) of a fire in the rear of a single family residence at 118 West 9th Street in Muscatine. Upon arrival fire crews found heavy smoke coming from the rear of the structure with several interior rooms involved in the structure. Firefighting efforts were hindered by the subzero temperatures and the strong winds that fanned the fire.
The occupant of the home was able to escape the structure uninjured. He was able to take one of his dogs with him, but could not convince another dog to leave. That dog is still missing.
Fire crews initiated an exterior fire attack and were able to keep the fire from spreading to other nearby structures. Additional resources were requested in the form of mutual aid from area departments and a callback of off duty personnel. Once the main body was extinguished crews were able to begin a fire attack on the interior. The fire was considered under control at 9:33 a.m., but crews remained on the scene to ensure all hot spots were extinguished.
Fire officials have completed the on scene investigation. A final cause has yet to be determined but it does appear to be an accidental fire. Initial reports indicate there was no activation of any smoke alarm. The residence is a total loss with an estimated fire loss in excess of $150,000. The American Red Cross was called to assist the residents of the building and 1-800-BOARDUP secured the residence and provided additional support as well.
There were no injuries to any citizens and no reported injuries to response personnel. The extreme weather did cause some minor exposure issues and created a large hazard due to extensive ice buildup.
First responders faced a variety of issues battling the fire in extreme weather conditions. The cold makes everything that is hit with water or overspray to ice up, which can create some massive ice buildup in these conditions.
“With the roads being slick from the snow it slows our response and makes some responses – like driving the aerial up a slick hill – more challenging” Assistant Fire Chief and Fire Marshal Mike Hartman said. “We did have a slight issue getting the aerial ladder back in place due to ice.”
With this location being on a hill and the entire street wet from the fire attack, the street will be a solid chunk of ice until it warms up enough for the salt to be effective.
Muscatine Public Works Department sent crews to salt and sand the area and will return later in the day to treat the street again. The public is advised to steer clear of this location as the street will remain hazardous until temperatures rise.
Another item that comes up sometimes in winter is frozen hoses and pumps.
“We have to leave our hose nozzles running because if we shut them down all the way, the hose will freeze solid,” Hartman said. “And it is hard to break apart and transport 50 foot sections of frozen hose.”
Hartman added that the cold can also impact the pumping. A minor issue of a pump drain freezing can lead to bigger issues.
“If we are not careful we can get the water inside the pump frozen solid,” Hartman said.
The Muscatine Police Department provided manpower to assist fire crews and were instrumental in setting up a warming area. Muscatine Emergency Management responded as well to provide support.
“I feel very proud watching the firefighters and police work together as one family,” Captain Tony Kies of the Muscatine Police Department said. “This is absolutely not a day for this type of work. Wilton and Fruitland were amazing as well.”
The Muscatine Fire Department was also assisted by fire crews from the Fruitland Fire Department and the Wilton Fire Department. Approximately 25 firefighters responded to the fire.
Residents are reminded that working smoke alarms save lives. With the holidays ahead of us this is a good time to check that all smoke detectors in your home are working properly, replacing batteries or the whole unit itself as needed.

MUSCATINE, Iowa – A Muscatine man is dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound following an investigation into a domestic disturbance Thursday night.
Investigators from the Muscatine Police Department began looking into an allegation of a domestic disturbance between a male and female, whom had previously dated, at approximately 6:24 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8. The male had allegedly been armed with a handgun during the incident and had made threats towards the female.
As the investigation developed, Investigators ended up going to the male’s residence at 409 West 5th St., in an attempt to make contact with him. As Investigators were knocking at the front door of the residence at approximately 9:28 p.m., a single gunshot was heard coming from inside the residence. Investigators immediately retreated to safety when a second gunshot was heard.
As assisting officers arrived, the area was shut down to traffic and remained shut down for the next couple of hours. Repeated attempts were made to establish communications with the male over a loudspeaker but officers did not receive a response. At 10:52 p.m. the decision was made to breach the front door of the residence and the male in question was found deceased inside from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The male has been identified as 65-year-old Terry Snyder (05/27/57). Investigation into this incident is ongoing.

MUSCATINE, Iowa – Six teenagers have been arrested by the Muscatine Police Department (MPD) following an investigation into the break-in and vandalism of Madison Elementary School in August.
The MPD and Muscatine Fire Department (MFD) responded to Madison Elementary School, 1820 1st Ave, for a fire alarm on August 5, 2022. When officers arrived they observed thousands of dollars of damage inside the school due to vandalism.
An ongoing MPD investigation has resulted in the arrest of six teenagers for their involvement during the incident at Madison Elementary School.

Female, age 15 arrested for Burglary 3rd Degree (Class D Felony), Theft 2nd Degree (Class D Felony), and Criminal Mischief 1st Degree (Class C Felony);
Female, age 16 arrested for Burglary 3rd Degree (Class D Felony), Theft 2nd Degree (Class D Felony), and Criminal Mischief 1st Degree (Class C Felony); and,
Female, age 18 arrested for Burglary 3rd Degree (Class D Felony), Theft 2nd Degree (Class D Felony), and Criminal Mischief 1st Degree (Class C Felony).

MUSCATINE, Iowa – Two individuals were critically injured following a two-vehicle accident Thursday morning in Muscatine.
The Muscatine Police Department and Muscatine Fire Department responded after the Muscatine County Joint Communication Center (MUSCOM) received a report of a two-vehicle accident at 8:46 a.m. Thursday (July 28), at the intersection of US Highway 61 and University Avenue.
The preliminary investigation determined that a northbound passenger car driven by Mikayla Healy, 23, Saint Cloud, Minn., was struck by a southbound pickup truck driven by Joseph Gadzik, 48, Davenport, Iowa, as Healy’s car attempted a left turn onto University Drive.
Healy and her passenger, Allison Magnison, 22, Muscatine, Iowa, were critically injured in the accident. Both Healy and Magnison were flown to the University of Iowa Hospitals for treatment. The driver of the pickup was treated and released at the scene.
No charges have been filed and the accident remains under investigation. Members of the Iowa State Patrol are assisting with the investigation.
MUSCATINE, Iowa – The Musser Park playground reopened for public use today (July 13) following the completion of a trail extension from the levee to Oregon Street as part of the Southend Improvement Project. The playground area was closed June 9 as construction began on the trail extension.
A sidewalk between the trail and the playground area was also added during the trail construction. Additional Musser Park improvements include erecting a new shelter located close to the right field fence of the ball diamond. The new shelter should be completed by July 22, weather permitting.
New playground equipment is planned for Musser Park, but the equipment may not arrive until next spring due to supply chain issues.
Public use of Musser Park and the playground area are at the user’s own risk. Children should be supervised at all times. Please be aware of surroundings when walking in or around construction areas, and avoid these areas if at all possible.
MUSCATINE, Iowa – The Muscatine Police Department is asking for the public’s help following an armed robbery that occurred Monday evening.
The Muscatine Police Department (MPD) responded at 9:33 p.m. Monday (June 20) to a report of an armed robbery at Pearl City Tobacco and Liquor, 200 Green Street, Muscatine. Witnesses reported that the offender entered the store, displayed a handgun, and left with an undisclosed amount of money and merchandise.
No injuries were reported.
